Kingsbridge Community College

College became an Academy on 1st January 2011

The College aspires to be one of the best schools in England and this marks the next phase in its upward spiral of development.

Kingsbridge Community College became an Academy on 1st January. The College was offered the chance to become an Academy by the Department for Education because of its outstanding track record of results and its outstanding Ofsted inspection.

Up until 2011, only schools in some difficulty or in challenging circumstances were able to become Academies. These schools had to have an outside sponsor to support them. Kingsbridge is one of the first of the new wave of outstanding schools who since September have been able to gain Academy status.

The College is now a Registered Charitable Company. It is still funded by the State but in other ways has the freedom to operate as an independent school. The Governors now have far more control over the College’s resources, and believe that they can use their new independence to ensure that the education offered by the College meets the needs of the students of this particular area.

The College already has an outstanding track record of success. Its exam results are consistently significantly above national average. Last summer students hit a new benchmark of 85% A*-C at GCSE and the College was the top Devon comprehensive for the number of students gaining A*-C in two or more Science GCSEs and in the numbers gaining English. Over half the students gained A*-B grades at A Level with several winning places at Oxford and Cambridge. The College continues to excel in sport with its Rugby teams through to the U14 Devon semi-final and U15 squad still one of the last 16 teams in the National Daily Mail Cup.

Principal Roger Pope said, “Over the last 10 years we have succeeded in gaining over £12million to develop our site and facilities, and have steadily increased our exam success. At the same time we have built up our pastoral system and extended the range of extra-curricular activities that we can offer. Our curriculum is the broadest we have ever offered, with a huge range of vocational courses to complement the academic. We are, for example, presently negotiating for the lease of an industrial unit in the town so that we can start a new construction course. We know that this is the only real choice of school for the majority of young people in our area, so we take very seriously our duty to achieve excellence in every aspect of all we do so that all children can benefit from the College whatever their particular skills and aptitudes. We are enormously excited by the opportunity that being an Academy offers to drive us forward in our next upward spiral of excellence”.
