PROJECTS WITH TRUST PARTNERS - 2008/9 and beyond

 

Workshop held in February 2009 involving representatives from all year groups at the College, department staff and all Trust partners (excluding Falmouth). From this was drawn up the attached Action Plan. Plaques depicting the Trust Partner logos are now on display in the College reception foyer to raise the profile of our Trust status.

Individual links between the Trust Partners have further progressed as follows:

Rio CIC
o Social Enterprise Project 2008-9
Working with Rio/NESTA involving 15 students from Years 9/10 on an enterprise and creative, but organised, project. “How do you create, develop and facilitate realistic social enterprise concepts”.
Whole programme of activities including creative thinking, branding culminating in the presentation of three concepts: Freedom Bus, Celebration of Youth Talent Festival and Community Centre Interactive Project. All concepts presented to representatives of the local community by the students.
o Extension of project 2009-10
“How do you engage the disengaged through work-related social enterprise concepts?”. Again working with Rio, this project has been commissioned and funded by the DCSF.
Group of 12 Year 8 students, some of whom are ‘disengaged’, taking the Freedom Bus concept further and working through a business plan in a fun and creative way alongside our local bus company, Tally Ho!. Includes drawing up routes, business model, revenue streams with the aim to provide young people with the ability to lead interactive social lives in a rural setting.
   
AstraZeneca
o Work experience placements: Sixth Former 2009; this year extended to a Year 10 student in July 2010.
o A member of AZ attended the KCC Development Day on Coaching and has now met with the KCC Core Coaching Group in order to set up coaching pairs between staff from the two organisations.
   
National Marine Aquarium
o Director has offered to take on role as interviewer for Year 10 Employment Day (2010)
o Paul Cox, Director, met with Dylan Fitzpatrick, Leader of Opening Minds at the College, to discuss input to OM Scheme of Work. Also been in College to observe and participate in OM lessons with Year 7 students.
o First in a series of small biographies of Trust Partners included in latest Parents’ Letter to raise the profile of the Trust amongst parents.
o Visit by Dr Pemberton (Biology teacher, Matt Hamilton & Mark Capps (Maths) Sam Simons (Design Technology) to the National Marine Aquarium on an Open Day for teachers - lectures on diplomas/courses
o Year 8 visited University of Plymouth Open Day at their Marine Science Centre at Queen Anne’s Battery. As part of that visit, also visited the NMA.
o Applied Science students visited NMA as part of their coursework 2008-9.
   
RSA
o As a direct result of the Trust partnership, the Principal has been invited to join the Steering Group to create a sustainable future for the RSA’s Opening Minds, with the aim of offering deeper support to schools and quality assuring the use of OM in schools to ensure consistency of good practice.
o Following on from this, the intention is that KCC will become a Hub School for Opening Minds in the South West.
   
University of Plymouth
o Involvement of Year 12 Social Sciences students with a research progress at the University of Plymouth investigating eye movements.
o Neurology lecture led by Professor Chris Harris on mammalian, physiology and behaviour to Year 13 students Summer Term 2009.
o E-mentoring between Sixth Form students/students from Peninsula Medical School, University of Plymouth
o All Year 12 Biologists visited Electron microscope department followed by tour of university campus September 2009.
   
University College Falmouth
o New addition to Partners of University of Falmouth (to be ratified December 2009)
o Links now made between Head of Careers and Sara Reed, Dartington Campus, University of Falmouth to arrange careers talks aimed at KS4/KS5. Initial meeting 2nd December 3.30pm to progress this.
o Visit by University of Falmouth to KCC Summer Term 2009 to talk to Year 10-13 students about future careers/education in the Arts.
o Future plans with Falmouth include e-mentoring and a visit to the campus in Cornwall.
