EDEXCEL GCSE APPLIED BUSINESS (Double Award)

At Kingsbridge we offer the Edexcel Applied Business syllabus, which is a double award GCSE. Applied courses investigate and report on real businesses. We study a range of local businesses, including Paignton Zoo, South West Water and the Reel Cinema over the two years of the course. The internet is a major source of information, but students should be aware of the changing business environment through newspapers, television and discussion, both at home and in school.

If you decide to take this course you will be expected to stay for Period 7, one day every week in Y10, in order to cover the whole syllabus effectively.

COURSE CONTENT

Unit 1- Investigating Business (studied in Y11)

You will ask how businesses meet their aims, how they communicate, how they are organised and what things influence them. You will look at two different businesses in detail. The unit requires thorough research using personal contacts, the internet, video and various other media. This is a coursework unit, graded through a portfolio, and not examined; it is worth one-third of the final grade.

Unit 2 - People and Business (studied in Y10)

What role do people play in the success of a business, what rights do they have, what responsibilities, and why are people important? This unit involves investigating how a business treats people – those who work for them and those who buy from them. It will mean researching customers and employees of Paignton Zoo. This is a coursework unit, graded through a portfolio, and not examined; it is worth one-third of the final grade.

Unit 3 Finance (Exam taken in June Y11)

How does money move into and out of a business, what records do businesses keep, how do they make decisions on money matters? This unit involves tracking and recording money in and out of a business, looking at Cash Flow Forecasts, Budgets, Break-even Analysis, Profit and Loss accounts and Balance Sheets. This is an examined unit; it is worth one-third of the final grade.

Studying Business can help you:

  • gain knowledge of industry, and skills needed for employment
  • gain other skills – organisation, ICT, research, problem solving and group work are just some of them.

Students opting for this subject should be keen to develop their interest in business and how it is operated. You must want to find out more through personal investigation, take a pride in the presentation of your work and want to gain business skills. You will be rewarded with two GCSEs, which you will have earned!
