Meeting students’ special educational needs
The college is committed to offering an inclusive curriculum to ensure the best possible progress for all our students, whatever their needs or abilities. We have implemented the requirements of the SEN and Disability Act 2001. We do not discriminate because of disability and we have regard for the SEN Code of Practice.
We approach inclusion as a sense of community and belonging and actively seek to remove barriers to learning and participation.
We work in positive and proactive ways to:
  • create an inclusive ethos
  • provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all students
  • create systems for early identification and assessment of needs
  • have high expectations and suitable targets for all students
We are able to put in place a range of provision to meet the needs of students. A few of the things we can provide are:
  • differentiated tasks
  • targeted teaching and learning strategies to particular strengths or weaknesses of individuals
  • additional staffing or individual support in lessons
  • extracted time for individual or small group work
  • literacy support using Sounds~Write
  • access to technology such as word processing (Alphasmarts), electronic spell checkers, Dictaphones or radio aids
  • opportunities for supported study or help during or after school including Homework Club
  • mentoring, coaching and individual target setting
  • Access Arrangements for exams

We are always happy to talk to parents about what we can do to meet the needs of their child. The current SENCo is Miss Jane Blumer and she can be reached on extension 142 or emailed directly: blumer.j@kingsbridgecollege.devon.sch.uk

Literacy across the Curriculum

As a College, we recognise the importance of cross-curricular literacy skills. Training is provided annually for all teachers and Teaching Assistants to boost in-class support and differentiation for effective reading & spelling. Our Literacy Co-ordinator, Suzanne Richards, delivers the majority of 1:1 intensive literacy work using the Sounds~Write programme which is then extended in the classroom. This synthetic phonic approach has a high level of success in boosting literacy quickly beyond chronological development.

Information for parents is available by emailing richards.s@kingsbridgecollege.devon.sch.uk as we recognise the vital role that you can play in supporting your child to develop independent literacy skills. We are always happy to discuss College support for students with literacy difficulties with parents.
