Creative Arts work in four Devon schools

Footprints, June 2008
in association with the Barbican Theatre

During June, four Devon schools have been involved in a big creative arts project which provided a fantastic opportunity for year 9 students to take part in a cross collaborative experience involving music, dance, drama and art. They worked with professional artists: Jules Laville, chorographer/dancer, Mark Laville, actor/director, Alex Christakis, musician and Nat Tarrah, artist/set designer.

Using images, myths and quotations as a starting point, the theme of Carbon Footprints gave students the chance to explore the global impact of our day to day living. Developed over the last four years, we have now enabled four other schools to work on the project, led by KCC.

During the first week, the practioners visited the schools: Kingsbridge Community College, Dartmouth Community College, King Edward VI Community College and Tiverton High School and worked with students on devising work. During week 2 the music and innovative artwork was completed. Then in week 3 each school spent a day at the Barbican Theatre, Plymouth completing their performance piece.

On Friday 20th June, the experience culminated with stunning, thought provoking performances at the Barbican Theatre in Plymouth which involved shared performances for all involved.

As a follow onto this, schools will share the work and their experience with their individual schools. The Kingsbridge Community College piece is to be performed again as the finale of the annual KCC Arts Fiesta on 1st July. Students from KCC will develop this idea and theme of carbon footprints further in a weird and wonderful evening of contemporary creative arts - 'A Tour of the World': a journey of Art, Dance, Drama, English, Media, Music and Science.

Actors and dancers will lead the audience around the site of Kingsbridge Community College fifty years in the future, visiting various World Heritage Sites including SS Enterprise, Neutrino Factory, The Garden of Earthly Delights and The Arbour. The tour will end at the 6th Form Centre with a photography exhibition, readings, dance  and the opportunity to sample Ghanaian cuisine. The performance of 'Footprints' will be the finale of the evening.
