23/02/2010 Masterclass in Les Miserables

Kingsbridge Community College are in for a real West End experience when the college’s production of Les Miserables opens next week.

Staff and students have been working hard over the past few months on this ambitious musical, and rehearsals were given a huge boost with a visit from Stephen Metcalfe, Head of Musical Development from Cameron Macintosh.

Working first with the whole company on complex ensemble numbers, and then individuals on solo performances, Stephen was able to give detailed technical musical direction during the course of the day, drawing out an inspired performance from the cast.

Stephen Metcalfe said: ‘This is a technically demanding show, even for a professional company, so it is really exciting to see such a young cast rising to the challenge of the production.’

Head of Drama and Director, Martin Lewis said, ‘We are so fortunate to have a professional like Stephen give up his time to work so closely with our students. It has been a truly inspirational experience for all involved.’

Les Miserables opens on Tuesday 2nd March until Saturday 6th March.
Tickets available from Reception at Kingsbridge Community College.

08/02/2010 Retina Dance Company at KCC, 3 February 2010
  retine dance

Students of Kingsbridge Community College had a fantastic opportunity to work with international, contemporary dance company, Retina.

Following a public performance of their current touring repertoire ‘Antipode’ at the Exeter Phoenix, dancers Robert Guy and Brian Tjion visited KCC to teach technique and contact work to GCSE and A’level dance students.

The PE department’s Red Star Club comprising year 7 and 8 students also had a session with the dancers and learnt some of the Retina style of ‘quirky movement’. There was also time to watch the professionals perform a brief extract of the show as well as a question and answers session.

The day ended with a workshop as part of the College’s CORE programme, open to all staff and students with the aim of giving them the opportunity to experience and learn diverse arts activities and core skills.

KCC Head of Dance, Suzie West, said ‘It was so great to have such talented professionals working with so many students. They were a real inspiration across a large spectrum of abilities and ages.’

08/02/2010 Making Primary Languages our Business Day

On Thursday 4th February, a group of 26 pupils from year 9 took part in “Making Primary Languages our Business Day”, held at the Watermark in Ivybridge. This initiative was designed to show how languages can be put to practical use, and to involve secondary school pupils in the drive to begin learning languages at a younger age.

tudents were asked to devise a resource which could be used to teach a foreign language at primary school.  They needed to show creativity, the confidence to give a public presentation partially in a foreign language, and teamwork, as they were grouped together with pupils from Ivybridge and South Devon Community Colleges.

It was a great day out and a valuable learning experience. Some excellent materials were designed, which some pupils will hopefully be able to try out in local primary schools later this year.

05/02/2010 Salcombe RNLI SOS Day at KCC
Members of Salcombe Lifeboat Crew spent the day at their local College in Kingsbridge. They took the opportunity to show some of the students the lifesaving equipment and techniques they use at sea, helping to raise sea safety awareness amongst students of all ages. With the RNLI rescuing an average of 4 young people every day, it’s vital that this charity organisation use fundraising events like SOS day to not only generate income, but also pass on an important sea safety message to people of all ages.

Kingsbridge College Media Associate Daniel Ashton said; ‘All the students had a fantastic time climbing all over the Bantham Lifeguard’s Rescue Water Craft (Jet Ski).

RNLI Day
The students had the opportunity to talk about lifesaving, sea safety and the techniques used with crewmembers from Salcombe Lifeboat, and I think they have been an inspiration for all the students who got to meet them. We’ll definitely invite Salcombe Lifeboat Crew back next year.’
