KCC Mock General Election Hustings, Friday 30th April

A packed hall listened to an excellent leader’s debate which really set the election on fire here at Kingsbridge Community College.

Students will have the opportunity to vote next Thursday using the College’s new VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) – FROG.

29/04/2010 Face to Faith Video Conference

Face to Faith Video Conference

On Thursday the 18th March, our tutor group along with our tutor Mr Bindon and Mr Randall (Head of Religious Education), took part in a video conferencing session with the Guru Harkrishan Public School: situated in the Punjab region of Northern India. Prior to the conference we prepared ourselves by considering the types of questions which might be asked by our Indian counterparts, and then we carefully compiled our own questions so that we could interact using the satellite link.

The key point of the conference was to speak and compare our ideas on what faith is, and what it means to us in living in different cultures.

One of the favourite parts of the event was when Jake Langman and I taught two Indian children to say: “My name is …..’ and, “I play football”, in French!  An attempt at trilingualism!!  We even sang a song using the video link and watched and listened with interest as the students sang a song back to us.

The students’ English was very impressive and it gave us such a great opportunity to speak to children of our own age; but with a totally different lifestyle to ours.

The event was a truly memorable global experience.

27/04/2010 World Dance Day: Thursday 29th April

Kingsbridge Community College will be engaged with a marathon of dance to celebrate this massive event. Flash dances to be performed around the town by Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 Dance Students.

Year 7 students will have a chance receive top quality street and break-dance tuition presented by Toby Gouricek and his team: the cost of which will be only £1. At lunch time ‘Just Dance’ will be showing on the Wii in the Gym for those who wish to have a go.

There will also be a Street Workshop running after College at 3.30-4.30pm with Toby – anyone is welcome to join in for a small fee of £1.00.

27/04/2010 KCC students attend workshop with Professional Writers

Earlier this year, 7 students spent a week in the delightful location of Totleigh Barton improving their writing and their football on a project called ‘Writing the game: from pitch to page’.  During this week they were fortunate enough to work closely with Sunday Mirror sports journalist Anthony Clavane, playwright Nick Stimson and poet and broadcaster Ian McMillan.
As a follow up to the week, the students were given a commission – to return to College and to write a newspaper.  And write they did.
Monday 19th April saw the launch of their paper - ‘Kingsbridge Kronicles’ - and gave the new writers a chance to celebrate, and show off their writing in front of various people, from parents to press.

The launch was a huge success and finished with a short video of the new writers in action.

To steal the words of Arvon Foundation’s Development Manager Emma Johnson, who made this all possible, the success of these students is “a great example of how sport and the arts can come together to give young people opportunities they would otherwise miss out on.”
We are hoping that students from Kingsbridge Community College will be fortunate to be involved in a similar project next year.

27/04/2010 “Come on you Greens”

In the Easter holidays, a small group of year 8, 9 and 10 students visited Home Park to meet Rory Fallon, one of Plymouth Argyle’s strikers.  This was a real treat for the Argyle fans among us and was organised by our ex-professional footballer, Site Manager, Graham Cawthorne.  The purpose of the visit was to interview Rory about his life in football and Christian faith and how he combines the two areas.  As part of the Religious Education GCSE course for Year 11 next year, we are studying a module on religion and sport and wanted the input of a professional footballer on the issues it could cause.

We had a great afternoon with Rory Fallon, who was very open and honest about his career so far, and was happy to answer our questions - finding it quite amusing to be asked if he would still swear at the referee and linesman now he is a Christian!  A tour of the ground including the dressing rooms ended a really enjoyable, informative visit.
