KCC winners at the Young Technologist Awards 2009

Friday 3rd July saw this year’s The Rotary Club’s ‘Young Technologist Awards’ held at Crediton QE2 School. Despite stiff opposition, Kingsbridge Community College nearly swept the board and the students walked away with first prize for GCSE Textiles for Katy Fothergill’s stunning Chinese influenced cocktail dress and first prize in the GCSE Graphics category for Beth Mahoney and her promotional pack for ‘The Ultimate Coffee Company’ (her father’s business).

KCC students also achieved second in the GCSE Resistant Materials category for Matt Darke's Sail Boat reading lamp whilst Oli Kensett and Ed Jarrold also took part and helped the team win the Marketing Strategy prize.

Roger Trembath, of The Rotary Club of Kingsbridge Estuary, said: ‘The whole team presented their projects to the judges in a very professional and articulate way and the College, and the DT department in particular, should be very proud of their overall results. I have been associated with this competition for many years and, in my opinion, with the standard of entry continuing to rise each year, the KCC team were all worthy winners.’

06/07/2009 Primaries Singing Day

On Thursday 2nd July, Kingsbridge Community College was delighted to welcome over 85 students from our feeder primary schools for a ‘Singing Day’.

Sharon Mitchell, Head of Music at KCC, had organised a full day’s activities for year 4, 5 and 6 students. It began with a physical and vocal warm up followed by learning simple rounds and part songs from around the world including some verses in French, Nigerian and Cantonese! There was also the opportunity to learn popular musical numbers: ‘Tomorrow’ and ‘Any Dream will do’ with the students being spilt into smaller groups to learn the more complex harmony parts.

The day was run with the help of Kip Pratt from Devon Music Services and culminated in a performance of the day’s work to an appreciative audience of parents and staff.

Sharon Mitchell said: ‘I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the day - it was so wonderful to work with younger students and realise how much talent there is in our area. We already have a junior choir running at KCC on a Monday afternoon and I hope today will inspire more students to come along and join us.’

Marine Conservation says 'Thank You'
On Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd June 2009, Year 9 students at Kingsbridge Community College took part in a beach clean and survey to raise awareness of the growing amount of litter on local beaches. The students were advised on what to pick up, what not to touch and how it was harming the environment. Students also received a talk from Andrew Marsh of the National Trust on the reconstruction of the dune system at South Milton. The aim of the beach clean is to allow students to put something back into the local community and to make a difference on a local scale.

Groups travelled to West Charleton and South Milton sands to collect litter which was put safely in black bin liners to be disposed of properly by the harbour authority and the National Trust. The waste collected was also recorded so that the results can be sent to the Marine Conservation Society who then try to determine the source of the waste. It was noted that the majority of waste was made up of small bits of plastic and bits of rope that most likely come from boats rather than people dropping litter at the beaches. Josh Morris, a Trainee Geography teacher who accompanied the students stated “It was brilliant to see all the students joining in together, doing their bit for the environment”. The trip was a great success and will be repeated next year.

06/07/2009 It’s a Global Knockout

On Friday 26 June, as their summer activity, Kingsbridge Community College’s Global Group held an afternoon of fun and games. They took students back to the 70’s, organising their global version of “It’s a Knockout”.

There was a challenging orienteering game which included answering questions on their team country as well as the ball and water games for which ‘It’s a Knockout’ is famous; there was even the traditional joker, ably played by Richard Fone, Head of Geography.  Each team was named after a country and supported by a Year 8 tutor group who threw themselves enthusiastically into researching their country, producing flags and banners and noisily supporting their country on the day. Team Jamaica was the winner and presented with a silver ‘It’s a Global Knockout’ cup which they will keep for the year. Team Australia and Team France were runners up and 8HO won the prize for the best supporters.

Year 6’s visit to KCC

KCC offered a warm welcomed the upcoming intake of year 6s from our ten feeder primary schools. Groups of students were given guided tours of the college and an opportunity to question current students.

A highlight of the day was a drama performance devised by the current Year 10 GCSE Drama students. Thinking back to their own questions and concerns when they joined year 7, students worked with Head of Drama, Martin Lewis to create a highly informative and inspiring piece which was greatly enjoyed and lead to some insightful questions from the year 6 students.

We look forward to seeing all the students again in September.
