Absence
Absence and Attendance
There is a clear link between a high rate of attendance and high achievement. If students are not in lessons they cannot learn! This year we are again looking closely at those students who consistently have incomplete weeks of attendance.
An absence from College should be explained by a note, an email (attendance@kingsbridgecollege.devon.sch.uk) or phonecall from a parent. If notes are brought in on return from being away, considerable time and money can be saved.
Your son/daughter will be taking external exams in Years 9, 10 and 11 at various points during the year due to the modular nature of exams so we request that family holidays be taken to coincide with school holidays as absence is not helpful to learning.
A term time holiday can be requested. The appropriate 'S2' forms are available from College Reception, Student Services or the download below. Such requests are considered by Wendy Ohlson (Assistant Principal).
Please do not request permission for holidays in Challenge Week or for more than 2 school weeks.

| IMPORTANT NOTE:- | These forms must be printed out and filled in offline and returned to us, as they do require a dated signature. |

Absence notes are checked each week. Our Educational Welfare Officer is notified of any concerns and is directly involved in monitoring all aspects of attendance. The College in conjunction with the County Education Welfare Service takes part in the ‘Fast-Track to Attendance Scheme’. The aim of the Fast-Track Scheme is to ensure that schools and the Educational Welfare Service deal with attendance cases quickly and in the most effective way to get the student back into school. The Fast-Track framework promotes early intervention and aims to ensure that appropriate action is taken to tackle non-attendance as soon as problems become apparent. If a student falls below an attendance rate of 80% with at least 10 unauthorised absences then the Fast-Track procedure is initiated.
Fast-Track involves engaging the parent/carer specifying what improvements need to be made over a fixed time frame period (usually 12 weeks). Parents and carers have the responsibility of ensuring that their child attends school regularly (Section 444(1) of the Education Act 1996). Where a parent fails in this responsibility, and no improvement is brought about within the specified time frame, prosecution proceedings are initiated.
