What is family learning?

Family Learning is the name for a range of courses for mums and dads – including grandparents and carers of children from 11-18 years of age.
They are organised by the College inconjunction with Devon Adult and Community Learning.
The courses are funded by the Learning and Skills Council as part of the national skills for life agenda.
The courses give parents and carers the chance to find out how their children learn; opportunities to work alongside their children and the opportunity to improve their own skills.

In the past courses at Kingsbridge Community College have focused on:

Being the Parent of a Teenager
Understanding the Curriculum
Opening Minds
ICT
Science

… and in the future as well as these we plan to do courses looking at ‘Animation and Media’.

The courses vary in length from short two hour workshops to a series of meetings lasting 12 hours over a six week period.

Benefits of Family Learning Courses include:

Increased parental involvement and understanding of the curriculum
Support for childrens’ learning at home and support for parents in bringing up children

A relaxed, informal atmosphere with tea, coffee and great biscuits.
