Islamic Art Project, January 2010

This month has seen an exciting cross-curriculum project taking place at KCC exploring the rich and complex art of Islam.
Renowned artist Razwan Ul-Haq spent two days working with year 8 students on a combined Art, Maths and RE project. Themes such as repeated patterns, symmetry and rotation were explored along with their connections to Islamic Art. The workshops also gave students the opportunity to look at the origins of Maths and cosmology within Islam while having the chance to be hands on and creative, producing calligraphy using Indian ink.
The creative element was further explored with students working on an installation piece to draw awareness to the different prayer positions in Islam. Silver foil figures were constructed and then formed an exhibition in the 6th form centre at KCC giving a sense of prayer time in a mosque.
The project sums up the importance of experiential learning at KCC and students relished the opportunity to be able to understand and be creative whilst learning about another culture. Their comments included:
‘Good to do something different’
‘It was relaxing; their religion is very peaceful and they do not believe in anything bad.’
‘Fascinating how we did the art work.’
Anna Uhr Delia workshop, December 2009

Year 12 and 13 students had the opportunity to work with an Australian artist in residence alongside students from Dartmouth Community College. Students chose a favourite piece of music as a starting point, listening to it whilst experimenting with mark making and colour relationships, identifying key areas of the song to inspire colours and patterns to build up a background in various media.

An element of the human form was introduced to the abstract backgrounds through the use of stencils and spraying techniques, resulting in colourful, striking canvases.
