A celebration of Musical Talent, Spring 2011

The end of the Spring Term at KCC saw a celebration of the diverse musical talent that the College has to offer with numerous concerts and performances taking place within the College and the wider community.

The KCC Spring Concert was the perfect opportunity for students across all years to perform solos and as part of ensemble groups in an exciting and varied programme showcasing their talents.

The concert opened with the Samba Band, followed by an inspiring medley of songs from the West End musical ‘Wicked’ in anticipation of the main choir’s visit to the show later this month. The Junior Choir and Senior Girls’ Vocal Group also delighted the full audience along with an enthralling combination of rock, jazz, classical and popular music from the ensemble groups. Yet another highlight was Hattie Spilsbury’s stunning rendition of ‘That Old Devil called Love’ with the Jazz Ensemble whilst students Joe Tapper and Eleanor Brock excelled as comperes for the concert.

Head of Music, Sharon Mitchell said ‘I am so proud of all the students involved in the evening. It has been a real team effort’.

The following evening, soloists from the College performed alongside the West Alvington Singers at a concert at St Edmunds Church in Kingsbridge.

A newly formed Rock Band also made their debut at a lunchtime concert in college. Terence Waldstadt who works with the band every Saturday as part of the College’s ‘pARTicipate’ programme of extra curricular arts activities said: ‘They played amazing well and sounded great. They’ve all worked so hard to pull off their first gig’.

BTech students also worked hard organising and then performing their work at two evening concerts which form part of their coursework.

The Summer Term will once again offer an exciting programme of music and other Arts opportunities, culminating with the annual Summer BBQ which this year is scheduled for Wednesday 13th July.

Music with the Marines

KCC year 11, 12 and 13 students were lucky enough to spend a day with the Royal Marines Band from Lympstone.
The morning was spent rehearsing with the Band, whilst the afternoon involved a career presentation and a concert given by the Band with students participating. Ex Royal Marine and now KCC music teacher, Peter Johnson, said: ‘It was a fantastic opportunity for students to play along side professional musicians as well as gain insights into possible careers.’

KCC Summer Barbeque and Musical Evening Concert 2009

The new 6th form building at Kingsbridge Community College provided the perfect venue for a Summer Musical Evening blessed with gorgeous weather and stunning music. The richly varied programme gave students from primaries schools and throughout the college the opportunity to share their talents with an appreciative audience.

The evening’s entertainment started with the Samba Band setting a party atmosphere. Three choirs also performed with repertoire ranging from musical theatre to choral arrangements. Soloists included Will Sargeant, Francis Pope, Henry Tozer, Tom Tozer and Lizzie Mitchell playing a mix of classical and jazz as well as the varied instrumental ensembles and a Rock Band.

Summer Concert2009

One of the highlights of the evening was the Big Band performance which involved 20 students from years 7 to 11.

Sharon Mitchell, Head of Music, said ‘This is a wonderful end to my first year at KCC. It has been hard work but I am so proud and grateful to all the students and staff and our hugely committed PTFA for making an evening like this possible.’
