Photography Statement
The Photography course is concerned with making a personal enquiry and expression involving the selection and manipulation of images.
We look at traditional methods of photography working in black and white in the darkroom (we have two very well equipped darkrooms) and some digital photography. Through this we look at different techniques of image creation and manipulation.
Some of the areas we study are pin hole photography, photograms, chemograms, collage, montage, working onto fabric, 3 dimensional surfaces and installations.
Creative approaches are encouraged which go beyond just observation and recording of events or situations.
There is a high proportion of written work, analysing and recording your own work and work of other photographers.
Curriculum Overview
AS – The course is divided into two units.
UNIT 1 - 50%
• Experimental work, alternative methods of photography such as pin hole cameras and photograms
• Research into work of other photographers including Critical Writing
• Project based on a theme (previous project titles have been, ‘Looking Through’, ‘Journey’, ‘Concealed & Revealed’ and ‘Evidence’)
• ‘Shoots’ have to be recorded in detail and connections made with professional photographers. Each ‘shoot’ has to be evaluated.
UNIT 2 - 50%
• Exam unit. This includes a 5 hour controlled test. Students will be given a selection of titles where they choose one to develop in a creative and individual way, building on the skills they have learnt from unit 1.
A2 - The course is divided into two units.
UNIT 3 – 50%
• One project title is selected from a given list. (Previous project titles have been, ‘People’, ‘Portrait, Action, Body’, ‘Still Life’, ‘Buildings’.)
• Students build on skills from AS and are encouraged to take a much more individual approach, looking deeper into the art of photography and making connections with other photographers. All work is recorded, discussed and evaluated after each ‘shoot’.
• 1,000 to 3,000 word critical study.
UNIT 4 - 50%
• Exam unit. This includes a 15 hour controlled test. Students will be given a selection of titles where they choose one to develop in a creative and individual way.
All Photography Course students are expected to keep to tight deadlines throughout the course.
Due to the expensive nature of photography and the amount of materials required, there is a compulsory initial charge for both AS and A2 course. Details showing this are circulated prior to the course.
You are also required to have your own SLR film camera.
